A dry basement usually comes down to one idea: keep water away from the foundation where you can, and give it a clean way out where you can't. A lot of that is within a homeowner's reach without any special equipment. Here's the order we'd tackle it in, from the cheapest fixes to the ones that need a pro.
Start outside — most water problems begin there
It's tempting to think of a wet basement as a wall problem, but the water almost always starts outside. Fix the outside first and you often solve the inside for free.
Clean and extend your gutters
Clogged gutters overflow and dump water straight down along the foundation. Keep them clear, and make sure downspouts carry water well away from the house — at least a few feet out, farther if you can. Adding downspout extensions is one of the cheapest, highest-value things you can do.
Check the grade around the house
The ground should slope away from the foundation, not toward it. Over time, soil settles against the house and starts tilting water back toward the wall. Building the grade back up so it falls away from the foundation keeps surface water moving in the right direction.

In our climate, two moments cause most of the trouble: heavy summer downpours that overwhelm drainage, and the late-winter thaw when frozen ground can't absorb snowmelt and it runs off the surface instead. If your basement only gets wet at those times, that's a strong clue the fix is about managing surface water and drainage, not sealing the wall.

Seal obvious entry points — with realistic expectations
Sealing a specific leaking crack can help, and interior masonry coatings can slow minor dampness on the wall surface. What a coating can't do is hold back water under real pressure — if water is being pushed in by saturated ground, a paint-on product will fail. Match the fix to the amount of water.
Make sure you have a working sump pump
If your basement takes on water, a sump pump is the controlled way out. Test yours by pouring a bucket of water into the pit and confirming it kicks on and empties. If it's old, noisy, or runs constantly, it's living on borrowed time. And because the storms that flood basements often knock out power, a battery backup is worth considering.
When it's time to call a professional
Do-it-yourself steps handle a lot, but some situations need a real system:
- Water comes up through the floor or the joint where the wall meets the floor, not just through a single crack.
- The basement floods repeatedly no matter what you do outside.
- You see a bowing wall or structural cracks along with the water — that's pressure, and it needs more than waterproofing.
- The dampness has led to mold or a persistent musty smell.
In those cases the dependable answer is usually an interior drainage system: a drain at the footing that collects water and routes it to a sump, so the water never reaches your floor. For a lot of older Scranton basements, especially on low or near-river ground, that's the fix that actually holds.
